PRECEDENT STUDY 001

Villa Savoye: Poissy, France

Villa Savoye is the last in a collection of white houses by architect Charles Edouard Jeannerct, also known as Le Corbusier. Villa Savoye was designed as a weekend house for the Savoye family. Le Corbusier built his home on a large field with many trees; this is because he wanted to show appreciation for untouched nature. The main themes for Le Cobusier’s design were appeal to the era of the automobile, nature, and safety.
The Savoye family lived in the house until 1940, and during the Second World War, the Germans and then the Allies occupied the home. During this time Villa Savoye was seriously damaged. After the war, it was used as a youth center. Because it was then property of Poissy, France, it was almost demolished. With the protests of Architects and Le Corbusier himself, Poissy decided to save the home. In 1965 it was listed as a historic monument, and restored from 1985 through 1997.
Architecturally, this home is amazing. I am excited to experience Le Corbusier’s work through my precedent study. This type of work is what initially attracted me to design and architecture, so I am especially anxious to learn more about it. I can’t wait to draw and build models of this incredible home, because Le Corbusier's work is so interesting to me.
